Bird Watching

Hamlet Downs is a perfect location for bird watchers and observers. The quiet rural environment provides us with a wide and wonderful array of bird life. There are a number of locations on our 36 acres where you may hide and view the wildlife including platypus# and of course the birds.

We provide guests with binoculars for use on the property and a selection of books on Tasmanian Birds.

The property was surveyed by a local bird watcher during the Summer season and identified over 50 bird types during a short 2 hour session. We have since added to the list below, other birds observed by guests*. Of course which birds you will see depends on the season and their habits on the day.

We may also be able to organise for a local amateur ornithologist to take you on a bird watching tour (subject to availability). Just email us for details.

In the same way, the platypus are wild so we have no control on their movements however if you see them, you will be amazed. Other places where you may observe platypus in the wild nearby include the Styx River and the creek on the walking track to Russell Falls at Mt Field National Park.
