Hamlet Downs is the ideal location to stop on your way to or from Tasmania's west coast towns of Strahan and Queenstown. In fact several days are needed to do our area justice. Don't forget to click on the links below (underlined text) to get more information on each attraction.

Attractions* within 10 minutes drive are:

• Mt Field National Park with the world famous Russell falls, the park for all seasons features many short and long walks displaying great diversity as well as winter snow fields and the amazing Tarn Shelf with its many exhilarating walks

• Tyenna river (rainbow & brown trout fishing, canoeing and swimming) Link to Guides*

• Old Oust Houses where once beer hops were processed

• Mini Hydro-power plant at Ellendale. Open to the public for small fee.

Attractions* within 30 minutes drive are:      

• Maydena Adventure Hub. Enjoy guided tours, tricycle rides, pedal powered rail rider and a trip to the Eagle's Eyrie atop an 1100 metre mountain 

• Styx valley at Maydena (home of world's tallest hardwood trees)

• The Florentine Valley

• Lake Meadowbank (on Derwent River for Atlantic salmon, and trout making it a fantastic and diverse fishery).

• Kinvarra Wines - Cool climate wines, Glenora Road, Plenty

• The Salmon Ponds (at Plenty, an historic trout hatchery) 

• Kayaking in nearby rivers with the Tassie Bound adventure group

• New Norfolk (largest town in the Derwent valley) offers antiques, history, services, Jet boat rides.

 

Attractions* within 90 minutes drive are:

• Southwest National Park and World Heritage Area (incl. Lake Pedder & Lake Gordon including trout fishing) 

• Abseiling the Gordon Dam for an adrenaline rush with Aardvark Adventures 

• Hobart (Tasmania's capital), 1 hour drive

• Richmond (historic town, Coal River valley vineyards)

• Central lakes district (Lake St Clair National park)

• Australasian Golf Museum, Bothwell. Australia's oldest golf course

• Take a Seaplane flight from Hobart eg to see the Gordon River and South West Wilderness

• Museum of Old and New Art in Hobart (50 minute drive)
